I’m a fast reader, I tend to skim even when reading online articles. While the speed is good, it also means I often have to go back to re-read something. I’m not sure when I started skimming more than detail reading but I suspect it was in my high school years.
I’ve always been a voracious reader, checking out 3-4 books at a time during my weekly school library trip. As an adult, it meant trying to buy paperbacks that were thick because I finished a regular sized book in two hours or less. Used book stores, dollar style stores, even the discount rack in drug stores kept me supplied with shorter books at reasonable prices.
Then came digital books and e-readers. Initially many indie books were $1.99 or $2.99 with the first one .99 or free when reading a series. When traditional publishers moved into the digital market, their digital books were sometimes priced higher than the paperback version.
I admit I was a free book addict. Many books were short reads for me and once again, I could consume a couple day. The pro side was saving money while finding new authors/series. I often read the free first book and then purchased all the books in the series.
Since I started collecting books for my Kindle e-reader in 2010, I’ve amassed over 3000 titles. Not all are fiction books – there are cookbooks, medical/health books, books about writing, and even history books for Stu.
Looking back, my first Kindle was purchased in April 2010 for $259. I upgraded to a refurbished Kindle Touch in December 2012 for $129 and sent my old Kindle to my daughter. August 2015 was the next upgrade to a Kindle Paperwhite for $189, loved the backlit screen. Eventually I maxed out the space on that one and got my current Kindle Paperwhite on November 2018 for $160, opting for the 32GB model to ensure I wouldn’t run out of space for my books.
So where do I get my books? As I said, I do buy books on Amazon, often by word of mouth from friends but even more so as I find a new series I like and continue on and buy all the books in the series.
I subscribe to a host of newsletters that feature books on sale, discounted books, and yes, FREE books. Here are my favorites:
❀ Freebooksy
❀ BargainBooksy
❀ Fussy Librarian
❀ Book Lemur
❀ Book Bassett
❀ ENT (Ereader News Today)
While there are many more out there, you will soon discover a lot of the same books across their emails. I subscribe to about a dozen but only look at 2-3 a day, switching them around. And of course, don’t forget my newsletter, McNicol Mysteries: Murderous Intentions & More. It comes out twice a month and is always full of new books and special deals for you.
Another great way to get books to read, if you are a voracious reader like me, is Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited. They have offered a 30 day trial for some time but right now they are having a BIG special, offering THREE MONTHS free. If you continue the subscription, it’s $9.99 a month afterwards.
Here’s to all the readers out there…enjoy!
And remember to write a review if you liked the last book you read.
I’m also a voracious reader. I’m not sure how many my iPad has on it, bit it has to be pretty high. I had a Samsung Notebook 10 up until last year and I bought my iPad. I thought bigger was better, but turns out it’s just heavier! I do love it though and I broke the other so…
I started with a Kindle reader then eventually a Kindle Fire. Once we moved to iPhones, we added iPads but I still kept upgrading my Kindle ereaders, much easier on my eyes than the tablets.
