Stu 1 – Gopher 0. Skunk?

When we last left you, Stu had just purchased live traps to try to trap and relocate the gopher family/families that have made our 2 acres their home. His first try would be using cut up cantaloupe. Just after dark, he blocked as many exit holes under our old horse barn as he could. Then he baited the trap and set it in front of the open hole.

Around ten the next, while he was off at his PT session, I let Cooper out. About ten minutes later I heard barky-barky-barky. I peered off the deck and could see him racing around the trap and barking. I thought I could see something in the trap, but wasn’t sure.

When Stu got home, this is what he found.

He loaded him up in the back of the truck and headed off north. Once he was over twenty miles away and in a rural area, he let him out. Gary Gopher wasted no time in exiting and heading off to settle into his new home.

We are sure we have more than one, so he set up the trap that night. Come morning, he went out with Cooper and stopped short. Ordering Cooper to stay, he looked a bit closer and realized he had trapped a skunk! Bringing Cooper in, he started Googling what to do. After reading and watching videos, the decision was to put a tarp over the crate and transported the skunk keeping the tarp on. Skunks don’t just spray, they need to feel threatened and then they need take aim.

Well, it worked. He transported Pepé Le Pew to a different spot, about fifteen miles from the house. He stood at the back of the trap, raised the tarp in the front, opened the door and waited. Eventually Pepe sauntered out and waddled off into the deep grass and weeds. Stu then texted me this:

Wow! Not what we expected and sorry, no photos. He will be setting another trap tonight and we will see what we find.

Ciao for now!
